when i was in igcses, all my classmates used something called SaveMyExams
so i interviewed the founder
and found out how it actually got started (then got to 2.5 million monthly users now)
so Jamie Undrell started as a tutor
and he couldn't find any good resources for his students, so he began creating his own
at that point, there wasn't any funding, a team, or even a plan. it was just a problem he was facing every day that he was trying to solve for himself
and he was doing it so well that students started going around telling all their friends about it
so jamie starts putting these resources online, at first just on a basic website
and word of mouth just spreads it even further, without them even needing to spend a dollar on advertising
and although SaveMyExams is one of the giants now, there was never one moment of meteoric growth. rather just years of compounding, of building better resources, better SEO- building something actually durable
and fast forward 10 years, that bootstrapped company has over 2.5 million users every single month
but it's also one thing to hear a big number like that, and another to feel it
and as someone who's used SaveMyExams myself (and seen almost everyone else in my school using it), it is pretty incredible to see the impact jamie built over the last decade
all from what started as building a simple fix to his own problem
(ps if you want to hear the rest of the story, i've got the link to the full ep in the comments)
